SO WHAT IS NEW?
Wikimedia is quite a treasure trove! The typesetters in the 19th century liked to have their fun too - just like people who use emoticons today.
These 'emoticons' were printed in 1881 in the U.S. magazine Puck, no. 212, p. 65, March 30, 1881. Unknown typesetter/author of Puck.
Text says "No copyright" ;-)
